Out of Darkness Cometh Light

Based in the West Midlands of England the band was formed in the late 1960's as the Wednesfield Sea Scout and Ranger Pipe Band.

The name was changed to the Wolverhampton Pipe Band in the early 1970's in recognition of its expanding membership. During the 1980's the band was particularly successful on the competition field winning the English Championships in grades 4 and 3, leading to upgrading to grade 2.

In the mid 1990's there were a large number of changes in personnel and the band once again returned to grade 4.

1996 saw the "new" band once again take its first tentative steps onto the competition field with a mixed set of results. A similar set of performances was experienced in 1997 and 1998 but an improving trend was apparent which continued through the 1999 season.

Further improvements continued throughout the 2000 season (both in piping and drumming terms) and a very creditable set of results was turned in, including two wins at English contests and two top six placing in Major Championships (6th at the British and 4th at Cowal).

2001 was a horror story for us on the contest field, but by the end of the season things were starting to come back together. 2002 showed some promise, but lack of consistency once again let us down in 2003.

2004 and 2005 saw the band achieve a string of third places at contests in England and 2006 saw further improvements with 2nd places being the order of the day.

2007 has seen a major leap forward in both the pipe and drum corps culminating in the band winning the English Championships Grade 4, taking both the band prize and the drumming prize (plus the Best Bass Drummer). The success of the band over the year was such that of the five contests entered in England we won 3 firsts and 2 seconds, plus the drum corps won all five contests!

2008 saw a similar mixture of 1st and 2nd places in English contests, but 2009 saw a clean sweep of 1st places at all English contests attended!

To everyone who knows us we look forward to meeting you at some stage on the contest circuit and to anyone who is interested in learning, or is already an established piper or drummer, come and see us. We always welcome new members.
